Official Report / Commentary

St Helens reached the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi-finals and ended Hull FC's dominance in the competition with a 25-22 win.

Back-to-back winners Hull staged a second-half fightback, with tries from Scott Taylor and Hakim Miloudi, but the Saints held on to book a semi-final clash with Catalans Dragons at the Macron Stadium in Bolton on August 5.

Zeb Taia had sent in Mark Percival for the first try and Regan Grace quickly added a second.

But Hull hit back in determined fashion with two tries in the space of three minutes through Albert Kelly and Chris Green.

Hull duo Danny Houghton and Danny Washbrook saw yellow cards in quick succession and Saints took full advantage, with further tries from Percival and Grace helping the visitors to a 23-12 half-time lead.

Taylor cut the deficit, before Danny Richardson slotted over a penalty while Masimbaashe Matongo was in the sin-bin, but Miloudi's late try set up a tense finish.

Saints boss Justin Holbrook said: "I’m relieved to have won that game. You can see today how they won it the last two years. They kept coming and coming at us.

"The period when they had two in the bin probably won it for us. But it did unsettle us too.

“We tried to put them away but couldn’t and credit to Hull for that.”

Hull boss Lee Radford said: "I’m disappointed we got beat but unbelievably proud of the team.

"The lads had nothing left at the end and they were running on fumes. As a coach sometimes all you can ask for is that effort and I got that today.

“The commitment they have shown is great and they kept showing up for each other time and time again. We matched them in every department. We just kept going at them and never let down."
