Official Report / Commentary

St Helens kept alive their Betfred Super League semi-final hopes in the most dramatic fashion with a nail-biting 18-16 victory at Wakefield Trinity.

They looked to have perished in their do-or-die Super 8s clash after trailing for 77 minutes but makeshift centre Jonny Lomax came up with the all-important try that levelled the scores and Mark Percival won it with the conversion.

St Helens leapfrogged Wigan Warriors into fifth place after halting their three-match losing run and are now only a point behind Trinity, whose own play-off hopes are now also hanging by a thread.

The outcome was tough on Wakefield winger Bill Tupou who scored two first-half tries, including a scintillating 90-metre effort in which he left for dead St Helens' new marquee signing Ben Barba, to put his side into a 12-6 lead.

Saints rallied after the break as Theo Fages added to Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook's earlier try but two Liam Finn penalties appeared to have clinched a huge win for Trinity.

The half-back saw another penalty hit the post late on and Lomax pounced on an error by Scott Grix to steal the points in a dramatic finale.

St Helens head coach Justin Holbrook said: "It's fantastic that we came up with the win tonight.

"I thought it was a really good game of rugby league. Wakefield were outstanding but we fought all the way to the end. It just shows you never write off the Saints.

"It was pretty obvious we needed it and we got it, so I'm rapped. I'm just happy we're still alive. It's exciting."

Wakefield boss Chris Chester said: "I'm devastated for the boys but it's still in our hands.

"We're disappointed but we're not too downbeat. We've had a fantastic season and we want to finish it strong.

"We need to go to Hull to get a win and that sets it up nicely against Wigan at home."
