Official Report / Commentary

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats picked up their first win of the new First Utility Super League season by beating Hull KR 14-12 at the KC Lightstream Stadium.

The Wildcats bounced back from last weekend's heavy defeat to Castleford Tigers, as tries from Mickael Simon and Stuart Howarth helped them to a narrow victory away from home, while Rovers are still searching for their first win of the campaign.

Wakefield still had to stave off a Rovers side that scored an extra try, Ken Sio's effort after the hour mark making for a close finish, but Liam Finn's two goals and the hosts' poor converting ended up proving the difference.

Kieran Dixon had actually put Rovers ahead on six minutes, though he could not add the extras, but Wakefield fought back through Simon just two minutes later with Finn nailing the conversion.

Howarth then finished off a quick move with Finn again converting, putting Wakefield 12-4 ahead, but just when Rovers hit back through Adam Walker's try, Dixon once again failed with the conversion.

At half-time the hosts were down 8-12, and they were further in trouble as Maurice Blair was sent to the sin-bin for tackling without the ball, and Finn converted the penalty for a 14-8 lead.

It was left to Sio to ensure a close finish, though yet again Rovers' conversions let them down, Ryan Shaw the guilty party this time and Wakefield proceeded to hang on for the win.

Wakefield coach Brian Smith said: "I speak to our fans, who expect some sort of a lightning bolt that will transform Wakefield. It just doesn't work like that.

"This was not one of those days - it's a nice reward for the players for their hard work. It's an accumulation of trying to get the best out of each other, day after day.

"We can't just flick a switch. It's going to take a sustained long-term approach."

Rovers coach Chris Chester said: "I can't put my finger on why we were so poor for the first 40 to 50 minutes. It's disappointing, the way we played.

"I'm disappointed with myself and the players, with the exception of George Lawler.

"We're making too many errors down their end of the pitch, trying to force the pass and not coming up with the right option."
