Official Report / Commentary

Tom Makinson scored a hat-trick of tries as England beat New Zealand 20-14 at Anfield to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.

The St Helens winger completed his treble with seven minutes remaining to ensure Wayne Bennett's side headed to Elland Road next week with the series already wrapped up.

After an early Jake Connor penalty, New Zealand opened up a 6-2 lead courtesy of a try from Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

But England went into half-time level as the impressive Makinson produced a classy finish in the corner.

The Kiwis needed just five minutes of the second half to go in front again as Ken Maumalo went over and then Shaun Johnson, who converted both tries, kicked a penalty.

Yet England came roaring back and Makinson finished off another flowing move in the corner to make it 14-10.

Connor missed the conversion but made amends when scoring his fourth try in as many international appearances, shrugging off a defender to touch down and level the scores.

The Hull player hit the post with the conversion but Makinson won it with another super finish after breaking through the tourists' defence.

England coach Bennett was full of praise for Makinson, saying: “I just want to know where you’ve been hiding him.

"I didn’t know about Tom until we took him to America and realised he was pretty special then.”

Makinson said: “Three tries in my third England appearance, it means a lot but, brushing aside the tries, it was a special performance by the team.

“I don’t think I have ever been involved as much as that. I set myself a goal to deal with whatever came my way and, to a man, that’s what we did.

“It was not just me, 17 blokes gave their all and that’s why it’s 2-0.”

New Zealand coach Michael Maguire said: “There’s a lot of hurt in the changing room. The boys have had to learn some pretty harsh lessons over the last two games about what Test football is all about.

“England have been performing like that for quite some time. They have a very simple game plan, they complete high and they stay there for the 80 minutes, it’s something we need to pick up on.”
