Official Match Report

Veteran half-back Danny McGuire pulled the strings as Hull KR kept their slim hopes of making the top eight alive with a 26-24 victory over Widnes Vikings.

The narrow triumph made it seven points from eight for Rovers but they must win their last two regular season fixtures and rely on other results going their way, while the Vikings were left to reflect on a 14th consecutive Betfred Super League defeat.

Francis Cummins’ side pushed Rovers all the way with youngster Owen Buckley scoring a double to top off a spirited second-half fightback, however it was the evergreen McGuire’s experience, game management and organisation that got the Robins over the line.

Widnes dragged themselves back into the contest after a poor first period and drew level at 14-14 after rookie full-back Olly Ashall-Bott and half-back Danny Craven cancelled out tries from James Donaldson and Danny Tickle.

But Rovers hit the afterburners and Adam Quinlan restored order with a superb solo score and then Liam Salter crashed over for the game-winning try either side of two well-taken efforts from Buckley.

Widnes interim boss Cummins said: “It’s not about desire, effort or ability. We got to a good place in the game but it’s two steps forward and one step back. Hull KR have been going really well recently and we knew it would be tough.

“We had our chances and we steadied down a bit in the second half but it’s unfortunate for us that we did some good things but we invent ways of bringing ourselves down."

Rovers head coach Tim Sheens said: “I was relieved at the final whistle. It was a tough game and we expected it.

"They are a better team than the table suggests. They have got some dangerous players. It was a war of attrition and it’s good to be on the right side of it."
